The European Union cannot do more than issue some half-hearted complaints on Turkey’s still on-going crackdown of the opposition, the press, or basically everyone whose loyalty to Erdogan is not 110% clear. We are witnessing the final steps of Turkey’s transformation from a basically democratic state into an autocracy: And, thanks to the refugee deal, there’s nothing we can do about it.

Ever since Russia incorporated Crimea, the old debate whether there has ever been a promise not to enlarge NATO has flared up again. Turns out it seems that the US indeed did make such a promise – albeit not a contractual one. One has to wonder whether the West was either naive or cold-blodedly ignored geopolitical realities.

Rebell oder Grund
Aufbegehren oder abfinden? Rebell oder Grund [=Ausrede]? Niemand revoltiert, schon gar nicht am Sonntag. Weil zwar viele opponieren, aber umgekehrt kaum jemand für etwas eintritt, jedenfalls nichts Konkretes, nichts Umsetzbares. Wie denn auch, wenn alles sich bezweifeln und relativieren lässt?

Immer mehr afrikanische Staaten könnten sich vom Internationalen Strafgerichtshof (ICC) zurückziehen. Viele sind ob dieser Entwicklungen äußerst besorgt, gilt er doch als eine der zentralen internationalen Errungenschaften der letzten Jahre. Allerdings kommt die befürchtete Austrittswelle nicht von ungefähr. Der Internationale Strafgerichtshof ist weit davon entfernt, den hohen in ihn gesetzten Erwartungen zu entsprechen.
